Vauhini Vara is a reporter who’s covered technology and business for The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and elsewhere. In 2021, she asked a predecessor of ChatGPT to write about her sister’s death. The resulting essay was both more moving and more disturbing than she could have imagined, and it quickly went viral. Her latest book is called Searches. On April 15th 2025, Vara came to the KQED studios in San Francisco to talk to Pui-Wing Tam, a Technology Editor at the New York Times.
