Patti Smith has been a brilliant and pioneering force in music, poetry, and art since the 1970s. Her debut album Horses was named one of the top one hundred albums of all time by Rolling Stone, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. As a writing collaborator, Smith produced “Because the Night” with Bruce Springsteen and a one-act play with Sam Shepherd. In 2005, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Smith the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, the highest honor given to an artist by the French Republic. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2010, Smith’s memoir Just Kids, the story of her life-long friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, won the National Book Award. Her other books include M Train, and the poetry collections Babel, Witt, Woolgathering, The Coral Sea, and Auguries of Innocence. Smith’s newest book, Bread of Angels, traces the entirety of her life, exploring her ever-changing relationship with art, her marriage to the songwriter Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith, her grief after his passing, and her dedication to artistic freedom and imagination. This is Smith’s most intimate memoir, delving into losses and loves with a raw, unflinching honesty.
