In his upcoming debut memoir Fictional Selves, cultural icon Kyle MacLachlan looks back at his off-beat journey in Hollywood. From his debut in David Lynch’s Dune, to his award-winning performance as as Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, to his recent viral social media stardom, MacLachlan reveals his complex relationship with fame, his relationships with iconic actors, and everything he learned along the way.
Kyle MacLachlan has built a fascinating acting career, performing in everything from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks to the adaptation of the video game Fallout. In the process, he has become a beloved cultural icon. MacLachlan’s 1984 film debut was the starring role in Lynch’s Dune. He would go on to work with the experimental director on multiple projects, including the classic film Blue Velvet. For his performance as Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, MacLachlan won a Golden Globe and gained international fame. Over the next few decades, MacLachlan brought his unique talent to a wide variety of movies, including The Doors, Showgirls, and the live-action adaptation of The Flintstones. MacLachlan also became a sought after guest star for popular television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, Law & Order SVU, Sex and the City, and Portlandia. More recently, he has gained a new group of fans through his award-winning performance in the show Fallout and the crime comedy show The Lowdown. When not acting, MacLachlan co-founded the winery Pursued by Bear, co-created the podcasts What Are We Even Doing? and Varnamtown, and became a viral session on TikTok and Instagram.

Jesse Hawthorne Ficks is the Film History Coordinator at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle, and has been a guest professor at Chapman University. He is Film Festival Critic for 48 Hills and is a frequent co-presenter with local festivals, including the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, hosted by Frameline. For 25 years, Ficks has curated and hosted MOViES FOR MANiACS, “a film series celebrating underrated and overlooked cinema, in a neo-sincere manner.”
