Dear Friends and Patrons of City Arts & Lectures,

Since City Arts & Lectures began in 1980, our operations and programming have expanded– we revived and now manage the Nourse Theater, for example– but our mission remains the same: to present engaging programs from all corners of the cultural landscape for theater and radio audiences. We have done so with no commercial sponsorship for 35 years.

This, as you’ve surely guessed by now, is our once-a-year request for your financial support. Your contribution helps to bridge the 25% gap between ticket income and expenses, keep ticket prices low, allow us to offer free access for high school students and their teachers, and continue our broadcasts on over 130 public radio stations around the country. Membership is tax-deductible and, in addition to receiving advance notice of all of our events, benefits include a 15% discount at all eleven Books, Inc. locations plus invitations to backstage receptions and more (see enclosed).

Now in the midst of booking our upcoming season, our small staff is working hard to balance popular voices with those that are critical though not yet well known. Last year, our 57 events included such highlights as Dr. Paul Farmer just returned from the frontline of the Ebola epidemic, Dr. Cornel West speaking on race relations, film tributes to Frances McDormand and Alec Baldwin, and authors Marilynne Robinson, Chimamanda Adichie, Lena Dunham, and Miranda July.

Two years ago, after 32 years of presenting in the Herbst Theater, we were displaced by renovations. So, with help from many of you, we brought the nearly forgotten Nourse back to life. What began as a necessity became an expansion of our programming as well as a home for other non-profits. Stop by the Nourse on any given night and you will find a chamber concert, a poetry slam, or stand-up comedy, in addition to the conversations with writers, scientists, and cultural figures familiar to City Arts & Lectures’ audiences.

We appreciate your past support and hope you will consider joining us again for another exciting year.

Sincere thanks,
