C.D. Wright
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
C. D. Wright has written ten volumes of poetry and is the former
poet laureate of Rhode Island. C. D. Wright's many awards include
the Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships. Wright's poems move freely
between coastal Rhode Island and the Ozarks, delivered with the
keen observation of an outsider. In Wright's 2003 collection, One
Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana, Deborah Luster's haunting,
sepia-tinted photographs of Louisiana's incarcerated men and women
accompany Wright's poems to "ward off forgetting." The subjects
of these poems bear life's scars - from literal knife wounds to
faces masked by self-sufficiency and bravado. Wright's most recent
book, Rising, Falling, Hovering, deals with the uncertainties
of modern life that the title suggests. The poems shift between
Mexico and America, troubled by a world at odds with itself. At
once personal and political, Wright peppers the work with uneasy
observations: "One has the sense of something out there that needs
saving." Yet her wariness of poetry or art as the answer also comes
through. She writes, "Nary a death arrested nor a hair of harm averted
/ by any scrawny farrago of letters."
