Jeffrey Sachs
In conversation with Kevin Welch
Wednesday, April 9, 2008 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
Jeffrey Sachs is Director of the Earth Institute, where he is
also a professor of sustainable development. The unconventional
and impassioned economist advocates combining economic development
with environmental sustainability. Through the Earth Institute and
as Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University,
Sachs has analyzed challenges of economic development, poverty alleviation,
and globalization for more than twenty years. From 2002 to 2006,
Sachs was Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi
Annan and Director of the U.N. Millennium Project. Sachs is also
President and Co-Founder of Millennium Promise Alliance, a nonprofit
organization aimed at ending extreme global poverty. A tireless
advocate for poverty alleviation in developing countries, Sachs
has previously served as an economic advisor to governments in Latin
America, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and the former Soviet Union.
He is a prolific writer of scholarly articles and bestselling books,
including The End of Poverty. His latest work, Commonwealth:
Economics for a Crowded Planet, describes the potential road
to sustainable and equitable global prosperity while warning of
the imminence of global economic collapse. Among his many accolades,
Sachs was noted by Time magazine as of the 100 most influential
leaders in the world in 2005 and he was awarded the Padma Bhushan,
the Indian Government's high civilian honor.
