Richard Russo
In conversation with Roy Eisenhardt
Monday, October 29, 2007 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
Author Richard Russo once remarked, "I've come to a point in my
life where I think almost exclusively in narrative." His vivid,
sprawling novel Empire Falls was praised for its narrative
structure, which follows the unerring rhythms of a small, fictional
mill town in Maine. Empire Falls received the 2002 Pulitzer
Prize for Fiction. In 2005, the novel was adapted into a HBO mini-series
staring Ed Harris, Helen Hunt, Paul Newman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman
in 2005. Russo also adapted his earlier novel Nobody's Fool into
film of the same name, and he has written several original screenplays.
He is considered one of America's finest novelists, and The New
Yorker observed, "There is a big, wry heart beating at the center
of Russo's fiction." His latest novel, Bridge of Sighs, continues
the author's examination of small-town life and the complex dynamics
of the American family. Russo is also the author of Straight
Man, The Risk Pool, and The Whore's Child, a collection
of short stories.
