John Richardson
In conversation with Alan Jones
Monday, December 3, 2007 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
Art critic John Richardson is a foremost expert on Pablo Picasso.
In his acclaimed series A Life of Picasso, Richardson details
the painter's complex history. The series' three volumes - The
Prodigy, The Cubist Rebel, and The Triumphant Years -
have been called the definitive work of biography on Picasso and
a significant contribution to twentieth-century cultural history.
John Richardson lived in the south of France for twelve years after
1949, helping build a private museum of cubism at the Chateau de
Cocteau. At that time, Richardson befriended Picasso and his contemporaries
Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, and Jean Cocteau. Picasso encouraged
Richardson to analyze his portraiture; a part of this landmark study
is incorporated in A Life of Picasso: The Triumphant Years.
A contributor to The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker,
and Vanity Fair, John Richardson was formerly the head of
Christie's U.S. operation and a professor of Fine Art at Oxford
University.
