George Packer
In conversation with Elizabeth Farnsworth
Thursday, November 12, 2009 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
George Packer is a journalist, novelist and playwright who
has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 2003. His
acclaimed investigation of the events leading up to the U.S. invasion
of Iraq, The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq, and his award-winning
play about Iraqi interpreters, Betrayed, show a deep and
wide-ranging engagement with the War on Terror that is without match
in contemporary letters. His most recent book, Interesting Times:
Writings from a Turbulent Decade, collects essays on some of
the most important cultural and political stories of the past ten
years-from Iraq to September 11 to the rise of Barack Obama and
the 2008 election. Packer seeks out not only the public figures
that played prominent roles, but also the many private lives that
were affected by the sweeping changes we have seen in recent contemporary
history. At once wide-angled and humane, Interesting Times
is an essential work from an unmistakable voice in contemporary
journalism.
Elizabeth Farnsworth is a former anchor at The NewsHour
with Jim Lehrer and the director of the recent documentary film
The Judge and the General. She has written for the San
Francisco Chronicle, The Nation, and elsewhere, and has
produced and directed a number of other PBS documentaries.
