Matthews was formerly Washington Bureau Chief for the San Francisco Examiner. He has covered a wide range of news-making events, from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first multi-racial election in South Africa, and the funeral of Pope John Paul II, to the past six American presidential campaigns. Matthews new book Life's a Campaign: What Politics Has Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation, and Success is the culmination of forty years observing politics.
