Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, and Patients

Live Performance of Comedy Central's animated series
Co-presented with SF Sketchfest

Monday, December 8, 2008  |  Herbst Theatre, 8pm

The debut of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist on Comedy Central in 1995 marked the beginning of a new era of adult animated series. The show ran from 1995 - 1999 and featured the animated alter ego of comedian Dr. Jonathan Katz, who voiced the character on the show. Dr. Katz psychoanalyzed famous celebrities and other comedians. Ben Katz, the doctor's deadbeat adult son, lived with him on the show and acted as a negative foil to Dr. Katz's good intentions and mild-mannered ways. Katz and the other characters improvised much of the show's dry, sardonic dialogue. The unique look of the cartoon came from crude-looking computer animation dubbed "Squigglevision" because constantly moving lines formed the outline of characters. The characters in Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist were drawn in vivid color against a typically static background in grayscale. Dr. Jonathan Katz has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, in comic strip form with the Los Angles Times syndicate, and in numerous live versions of the show including many of the actors and other celebrities who appeared in animated form during the television series.
