Joel Grey

In Conversation and Song, hosted by Steven Winn

Thursday, January 28, 2010  |  Herbst Theatre, 8pm

Broadway legend Joel Grey has delighted audiences on stage and screen for more than fifty years. Grey won a Tony for his Broadway portrayal of the Master of Ceremonies in the 1966 debut of Cabaret, for which he also won the Academy Award six years later. He has also had recurring roles on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Oz, Alias, and Law and Order. Joel Grey is an actor of remarkable range, and has portrayed characters as varied as a marriage counselor, demon and intergalactic rebel. The son of comedian Mickey Katz, the theater attracted Grey from a young age. He performed in his first play, On Borrowed Time, at age nine. But it is Joel Grey's voice that truly sets him apart. In addition to appearing on several Broadway and Off-Broadway original cast recordings, Grey has released three of his own albums: Songs My Father Taught Me, Whoever Heard of a Fird, and Black Sheep Boy. These three albums reveal Grey as a singer who can cover songs by Cream and John Lennon, while elsewhere rendering the Jewish folk music of his childhood with moving warmth and simplicity. Grey also enjoys photography and has published three books of photos, including 1.3 - Images from My Phone.

Steven Winn is a freelance writer and critic who spent 28 years at the San Francisco Chronicle, the last six as the paper's Arts and Culture Critic. His work has appeared in Art News, California, Good Housekeeping, Parenting, Prairie Schooner, Sports Illustrated and others. His memoir, Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog, is published by Harper in 2009.
