Andre Dubus III

 In conversation with Mark Hertsgaard

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 |  Herbst Theatre, 8pm

American author Andre Dubus III, best known for his novel House of Sand and Fog, followed a winding path before settling into the writing life. The son of the Louisiana-born writer Andre Dubus, his twenties found Andre Dubus III studying sociology, economics and Marxist theory at University of Texas at Austin. After dropping out of a doctoral program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dubus worked as a private investigator, His new novel, The Garden of Last Days, will be published in June 2008. Dubus tells several intersecting stories in the book, following a Florida stripper, a mysterious foreigner, and a drunk and dangerous client. Behind it all looms the specter of September 11, which the characters cannot yet imagine, but which creates its own momentum and dread for Dubus' reader. Andre Dubus III navigates the writing life as well as his fiction with a healthy dose of realism, stating that the purpose of writing is to create "something beautiful in and of itself, that lives on its own."*
