Louann Brizendine

In conversation with Michael Krasny

Wednesday, April 14, 2010  |  Herbst Theatre, 8pm

Neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine follows up her New York Times best selling book The Female Brain, which has been published in 24 countries across the world, with The Male Brain, due out in early 2010. She is a practicing clinician, best-selling author, public speaker and media commentator who specializes in the relationship dynamics that result from the neurobiology of male and female brains. She completed her degree in Neurobiology at UC Berkeley, graduated from Yale School of Medicine and did her internship and residency at Harvard Medical School. How changes in hormone levels affect the brain - and in particular - how hormones influence mood, irritability, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, thinking, sleep, memory, sexual function and energy, are Dr. Brizendine's main research interests. In response to the overwhelming need for information on the female mind, Brizendine established the first clinic in the country to study and treat women's brain function. She annually teaches courses to medical students and residents throughout the country addressing these topics of neurobiology. As a member of the UCSF faculty, she is instrumental in fostering the next generation of neurobiological experts.

Michael Krasny is the host of the KQED radio program Forum. He is also a Professor of English at San Francisco State University and the author of Off Mike: A Memoir of Talk Radio and Literary Life. His many interviews for City Arts & Lectures include Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, Norman Mailer, and Joyce Carol Oates
