Julian Barnes
In conversation with Alan Jones
cancelled | Herbst
Theatre, 8pm
In addition to his eleven novels, English
writer Julian Barnes has written two short story collections, four
works of nonfiction and two translations. After studying modern
language at Magdalen College, Oxford, Barnes worked as a lexicographer
for the Oxford English Dictionary. That command of English language
makes Barnes' work a delight to read, from the metaphysical speculations
of Flaubert's Parrot (1984) and The History of the World
in 10 ˝ Chapters, to the historical roots of Arthur & George
(2006) and his most recent work, the memoir Nothing to be Frightened
of. Julian Barnes' many awards include the Somerset Maugham
Award, the Prix Médicis, the Shakespeare Prize and three nominations
for the Booker Prize, for Metroland, Flaubert's Parrot and
Arthur & George. A self-professed Francophile, Barnes became
a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004 for his
artistic contributions to the people and culture of France. His
latest book, Nothing to Be Frightened of, deals with Barnes'
very personal fear of death, meditations on his parents decline
into old age and a wistfulness toward religious faith, which was
not a part of the Barnes household. In his fiction Barnes deals
extensively with themes of truth, human mutability and the difficulties
of knowing our fellow man. His memoir continues this quest for a
measure of peace in a deeply flawed world.
