Karen Armstrong
In conversation with Roy Eisenhardt
Thursday, September 24, 2009 |
Herbst Theatre, 8pm
Karen Armstrong is among the world's foremost commentators
on religion. A former nun in the Roman Catholic Society of the Holy
Child Jesus, Armstrong now defines herself as a "freelance
monotheist," drawing from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The theologian writes about multiple faiths in her bestselling books,
including Muhammad, A History of God, Buddha, The Battle for
God, The Great Transformation and The Bible: A Biography.
In her critical studies and the memoirs Through the Narrow Gate
and The Spiral Staircase, Armstrong's perspective is based
on compassion instead of reduction. "It doesn't really matter
what you believe as long as it leads you to practical compassion,"
Armstrong has said. In her forthcoming book, The Case for God,
Armstrong continues her quest for understanding by tracing faith
from prehistory to the present and trying to riddle out why, for
many in the present age, God has become unbelievable.
Veteran interviewer Roy Eisenhardt practiced law for twelve
years in San Francisco and taught at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School
of Law. He was President of the Oakland Athletics and served as
the Executive Director for the California Academy of Sciences.
