Laurie Anderson
In conversation with Michael Azerrad
Monday, April 27, 2009
Musician, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker and visual artist
-
Laurie Anderson has synthesized her dynamic blend of talents
into a rich interpretation of the artistic life. Born in Glen Ellyn,
Illinois and educated at Mills College and Barnard, Laurie Anderson
has created a vast body of work characterized by inventiveness.
She has created musical devices for performance use when no suitable
instrument existed, including the "tape-bow violin" and
"talking stick" that use recording technologies to alter
and repeat sound. Since the 1970s, Anderson has turned her creative
energies toward highly original performance. She has performed wearing
ice skates frozen in a block of ice, written an article on New York
City culture for the Encyclopedia Britannica, conceived a multi-media
presentation inspired by Moby Dick, and served as the first, and
only to-date, artist in residence at NASA. Laurie Anderson's multimedia
musical performances challenge the audience to reexamine its view
of art and music, by always seeking new modes of perception and
fresh means of expression.
Rock critic Michael Azerrad is a contributing editor at
Rolling Stone. His music feature articles have appeared in
numerous publications, including Spin, Musician, and Details.
